How to Automate Trading Without Breaking Your Prop Firm's Drawdown Rules
Most funded accounts aren't lost to bad strategies — they're lost to one bad trade or one bad day that breaches a daily loss limit or max drawdown rule the trader knew about but hadn't actually enforced in their execution. Automation makes this worse if it's not built for it, because an EA won't stop itself out of instinct the way a human trader eventually does.
The three rules that end funded accounts
- Daily loss limit — most firms cap loss per calendar day (often 4-5% of account balance). One EA that keeps re-entering after a loss can blow through this in an hour.
- Maximum drawdown — the total peak-to-trough loss allowed over the life of the account, usually trailing. This is the one automated strategies breach most often because it compounds silently across days.
- Position/exposure caps — many firms restrict simultaneous open positions or total lot exposure. A strategy that scales into multiple correlated pairs can breach this without any single trade looking risky.
Why "I'll just watch it" doesn't work
Funded account breaches usually happen outside normal trading hours — an EA runs 24/5, and the breach that costs the account often happens at 3am during a news spike, not during the session the trader was actually watching. If the risk limit isn't enforced in the execution logic itself, watching the dashboard doesn't help.
What enforcement should actually look like
The limits need to be checked before every trade fires, not just reported after the fact:
- Daily P&L tracked against the firm's specific reset time (not just UTC midnight — firms differ on this).
- A hard stop that blocks new entries once daily loss or drawdown thresholds are hit, not just an alert.
- Position sizing calculated from remaining risk budget, not a fixed lot size that ignores how much of the daily limit is already used.
- A manual "flatten everything" control you can trigger from anywhere, in case a market condition needs an override the automation didn't anticipate.
Choosing an EA for a funded account
Ask specifically whether the product has prop-firm-style risk enforcement built in, or whether it only has generic stop-loss/take-profit settings. Generic risk settings protect a single trade — they don't protect the account against the specific daily-loss and trailing-drawdown math prop firms use.
Automate inside your firm's exact limits
TradeAI enforces daily loss limits, max drawdown, and position caps at the execution layer — not just as a dashboard warning.
